Before buying a used iPhone: 5 pitfalls to avoid
Published: 22 July 2026
Used is cheaper — but without a method, it is a gamble.
These 5 pitfalls can cost you hundreds of euros. Read before you pay.
Why this article?
Between private sellers (Leboncoin, Vinted, forums), bargains exist — but “cheap” sometimes hides what you cannot see. Here are the 5 most common pitfalls, and how to avoid them one by one.
Pitfall 1: non-original parts / a “tampered” phone
The problem. Third-party screen or battery, swapped components. Looks fine at first glance, then: off colours, fussy touch, overheating, collapsing battery life.
How to avoid it.
- Check Settings → General → About: any “unknown part” alerts?
- Every certified unit goes through 80+ inspection points (screen, Face ID, cameras, sensors) — tampering does not pass.
Pitfall 2: iCloud lock / a blocked phone
The problem. An iPhone with activation lock still on, or reported lost/stolen. At best unusable without the original Apple ID, at worst remotely locked.
How to avoid it.
- Require a device signed out of iCloud + reset, and restart it with your Apple ID before you pay.
- Check the IMEI.
- In certified, provenance and activation status are checked at sourcing, IMEI recorded.
Pitfall 3: worn battery, collapsing battery life
The problem. “The battery lasts fine” … and it is at 78%. Below 80%, battery life drops; an original replacement is expensive.
How to avoid it.
- Look at Settings → Battery → Battery Health: under 85%, think twice.
- Certified guarantees ≥ 85%; if the battery has been replaced, its origin and the information available are shown on the device listing.
Pitfall 4: condition that does not match the listing
The problem. Flattering photos, and on arrival: scratches, marked corners, marked screen. “Like new” means nothing if everyone has their own definition.
How to avoid it.
- Require real photos (front, back, sides, screen on), not an official render.
- Certified applies one device, one photo: every unit is photographed. Transparent grades A/B/C — condition, not functions.
Pitfall 5: no after-sales, no return
The problem. Between private sellers, “paid = no recourse.” Even in a shop, check after-sales.
How to avoid it.
- Confirm warranty + return before you pay.
- Certified includes 6-month warranty + 14-day returns: not convinced → return; functional issue → handled.
Recap table: private vs certified
| Pitfall | Private used | Certified Giggle Fone |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party parts | hard to spot alone | 80+ inspection points |
| iCloud / blocked | check yourself | verified provenance + IMEI |
| Worn battery | declared | guaranteed ≥ 85% |
| Misleading condition | listing vs real | one device, one photo |
| No after-sales | paid = done | 6 months + 14 days |
In one sentence: used is not “bad” — but if you do not know how to inspect, let a system do it for you.
60-second checklist
- IMEI checked, no “unknown part” alert
- iCloud signed out + restart with your Apple ID
- Battery Health ≥ 85%
- Real photos of the unit (see
/d) - Warranty + return confirmed
