The iPhone 14 generation is unusual: the "14" and the "14 Pro" are barely the same product.

One carries 2021 silicon and design. The other introduced Dynamic Island, a 48 MP sensor and an always-on display. It's the widest gap ever seen within a single generation.

The short version

In one line: the 14 and 14 Plus are close to an iPhone 13 Pro in substance — same A15 with 5-core GPU, same 6 GB — but with a 60 Hz display, a dual 12 MP camera, and no telephoto or LiDAR. It's a downgraded 13 Pro, not a cut-price 14 Pro.

Apple Intelligence: excluded across the board, Pro Max included

None of the four iPhone 14 models support Apple Intelligence.

An easy mistake to make: "Pro Max" sounds like the top of the range. But the line runs by generation, not by tier. You need at least an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16.

Note for France: Apple Intelligence is available in Europe, but the new Siri AI remains absent from iPhone and iPad in the EU (Digital Markets Act), with no announced date. Mac and Vision Pro only.

Satellite SOS does work in France

The iPhone 14 introduced Emergency SOS via satellite. Good news: the service has been available in France since iOS 16.2.

Out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, the iPhone guides you to point at a satellite and transmits your location, altitude, battery level and medical ID. It's a text exchange, not a voice call. French emergency numbers covered include 15, 17, 18, 114, 119, 191 and 196. The service is still free — Apple keeps extending the period.

What isn't covered in France: Apple's other satellite features (Messages via satellite, Find My via satellite, Roadside Assistance via satellite) aren't available everywhere. France currently offers only Emergency SOS via satellite.

And for imported devices: Apple states that iPhones purchased in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have no satellite features at all. An imported unit from those markets cannot use satellite SOS, even in France.

Crash Detection is a global feature.

Display and cameras

14 / 14 Plus: 12 MP main (f/1.5) + 12 MP ultra-wide, with Photonic Engine for low light and Action mode for video stabilisation. No telephoto, no LiDAR, no ProRAW.

14 Pro / Pro Max:

• 48 MP main sensor, with 48 MP ProRAW
• Dynamic Island replacing the notch
• Always-on display, dropping to 1 Hz
• 3x telephoto — not 5x, which only arrived with the iPhone 15 Pro Max
• ProRes up to 4K 30 fps; 128 GB models are limited to 1080p/30 fps

Refurbished prices in France (September 2026)

For reference: at launch in France, the iPhone 14 128 GB was €1,019, the 14 Plus €1,169, the 14 Pro €1,329 and the 14 Pro Max €1,479.

Worth noting: new iPhone 13 and 14 prices are often close. Refurbished, the gap sometimes comes down to about €45 — for a fuller GPU and 6 GB of memory. On this generation, the 14 is often the better compromise.

European version and warranty

Where to look: Settings → General → About → Model Number. European models use 1 nano-SIM + 1 eSIM (no dual physical SIM).

Warranty: in France, buying from a professional gives you a 2-year legal guarantee of conformity, on top of the manufacturer warranty. It's a legal right, independent of the seller's commercial policy.

Apple may restrict its own warranty service to the country of original sale, so a non-European unit can be refused by Apple France — but the legal guarantee owed by the professional seller still stands.

Known issues

Camera vibration (14 Pro / Pro Max) — shortly after the 2022 launch, many users reported violent shaking of the rear module in third-party apps (Instagram, TikTok). The native Camera app was unaffected. Fixed in iOS 16.0.2 — a historical issue now.

Green lines / white screen (isolated 14 Pro Max cases) — some units developed green lines, white screens or unresponsive touch. Technicians note that the 14 Pro Max panel architecture differs from the 13 series and offers no "jumper wire" repair points, making the job harder and more expensive. Apple has opened no out-of-warranty free replacement programme.

Battery ageing — comparable to the 13 generation. Below 80 %, replacement is due.

Who is it for?

An underrated point about the 14 / 14 Plus: the market treats them as "roughly a 13," when they actually carry the 13 Pro's chip and memory (A15 5-core + 6 GB). At a comparable price, the 14's A15 has 5 GPU cores against 4 on the standard 13.
