Launched in September 2021, the iPhone 13 is now five years old. It still sells, in volume, as a refurbished device.

The answer depends on what you need. For fast, stable everyday use, this range still holds up. For Apple Intelligence, it never will.

The short version: four models, two tiers

Memory and refresh rate are the two differences that matter. 4 GB versus 6 GB decides how often apps reload in the background; 60 Hz versus 120 Hz is obvious the moment you scroll.

A classic trap: the 13 Pro (6.1") has a smaller battery than the standard 13, yet a longer rated runtime (22 h versus 19 h). That's the adaptive 120 Hz display at work. Don't compare raw battery capacities.

Refurbished prices in France (September 2026)

This is the figure that matters today:

Market context: between July 2025 and June 2026, the average refurbished iPhone price fell by about 22 %. A grade A unit typically sells for 30–50 % below new. Prices vary with capacity, cosmetic condition and battery health — always check all three.

For reference: at launch in France, the iPhone 13 128 GB was €909 and the 13 Pro €1,159. Refurbished represents roughly a 70 % discount.

Software: how much life is left?

All four models can update to iOS 27. It shipped in September 2026 and supports iPhone 11 and later.

A widely misread headline: some outlets ran "update not recommended below iPhone 13," which reads as "iPhone 13 included." It refers to models older than the iPhone 13. The iPhone 13 itself updates normally.

What iOS 27 brings: refreshed interface, redesigned Notification Centre, separate audio controls, expanded parental controls, security fixes, performance and battery optimisations.

Worth knowing: Apple states that after installing an iOS update there is no public way to roll back. Back up before updating.

Apple Intelligence: the whole range is excluded

This is the single most important thing to know before buying an iPhone 13 in 2026.

None of the four iPhone 13 models support Apple Intelligence, including the 13 Pro Max.

The dividing line runs by generation, not by tier. To get Apple Intelligence you need at least an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16. Apple's "How to get Apple Intelligence" page lists the supported devices.

Note for France: Apple Intelligence itself is available in Europe. However, the new Siri AI is absent from iPhone and iPad in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act, with no announced date. It is available only on Mac and Vision Pro. See our iPhone 16 guide for the detail.

Three models, three discontinuation dates

The 13 mini was Apple's last mini. Its 140 g is the headline feature, but it also has the smallest battery in the range. Longer term, its display and battery are model-specific and don't fit the standard 13, so supply can tighten.

European version: what to check

Where to look: Settings → General → About → Model Number.

On the shutter sound: iPhones sold in Japan and Korea force a camera shutter sound that cannot be silenced locally. Since iOS 15, those models can be muted when used outside Japan and Korea on a local network; the restriction returns on return.

On warranty: in France, any product sold by a professional carries a 2-year legal guarantee of conformity, independent of the commercial warranty. It's a legal right, not a seller's favour. Apple separately offers its own one-year manufacturer warranty.

Apple may restrict its own warranty service to the country of original sale, so a non-European unit can be harder to get serviced by Apple France — but the legal guarantee still applies, owed by the professional seller.

Repair costs in France

The Bonus Réparation: the French state covers part of the bill at accredited repairers, with an immediate discount of up to €50. Always ask — many customers don't know it exists.

AppleCare+: around €169–269 for two years, with a €29 excess for a screen and €99 for other damage. Battery replacement is free below 80 % capacity.

Non-genuine batteries trigger an "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery" message and stop Battery Health from displaying, which hurts resale. Repairers don't always reseal the device, so IP68 can be lost.

Three checks before buying

① Battery health Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below 80 %, or with a service message, budget for a replacement. Ask for a screenshot.

② The display Some iPhone 13 units show a green tint, flicker or green lines — most visible at low brightness on grey backgrounds. Not a universal defect, and Apple has never acknowledged a faulty batch, but check on a plain white or grey background at low brightness, not a colourful wallpaper.

Who is it for?

Avoid if: you want Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro minimum), you need USB-C, or you want long battery life in a mini body.
