The iPhone 16 is a milestone — the first generation where every model supports Apple Intelligence. Previously only the Pro models qualified.
But there's a significant French caveat, covered below.

The 8 GB across the board is the key point: all four models support Apple Intelligence, with no tier split.
Apple Intelligence in France: what works, what doesn't
This is the most important point for a French buyer, and it's often explained badly.
What works: Apple Intelligence is available in Europe. AI photo editing, Image Playground, writing tools, Messages suggestions — all accessible on an iPhone 16 bought in France.
What doesn't: the new Siri AI is absent from iPhone and iPad in the European Union, under the Digital Markets Act. Apple announced this at WWDC 2026 and has given no availability date. It's accessible only on Mac (macOS 27, M1 and later) and Vision Pro.
In practice, for a French iPhone user:

The background: Apple argues the Commission's reading of the DMA would force it to open its assistant to private data without adequate protections. The Commission disputes this. The standoff could last "months, or years."
Before you buy: an iPhone 16 gives you Apple Intelligence, but not Siri AI on mobile. If Siri AI is your reason to buy, no iPhone will provide it in France for now.
The 60 Hz question on standard models
2026 reviews are unanimous: 60 Hz is the main weakness of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
- Even budget Android phones now run 90 or 120 Hz
- The standard models also lack an always-on display
- On the larger 16 Plus, 60 Hz is more visible still
Put fairly: the combination of A18, 8 GB, years of iOS updates and IP68 remains sensible at a reduced price. 60 Hz is a weakness, not a dealbreaker for someone who isn't comparing side by side.

For reference: at launch in France, the iPhone 16 was €969, the 16 Plus €1,119, the 16 Pro €1,229 and the 16 Pro Max €1,479.
A useful warning: on the iPhone 16, refurbished sometimes comes close to new on promotion. Compare carefully — if the gap is only a few tens of euros, new with a full manufacturer warranty may be the better buy.
Known issues
Overheating (16 Pro / 16 Pro Max) — the most reported. Triggers: gaming, 4K recording, navigation, fast charging, restoring from backup. Possible consequences: reduced brightness, throttling, slower charging.
Camera Control button — several users reported unresponsive touch around the button, traced to an iOS touch-recognition issue, fixed in iOS 18.0.1. Check the system version and test the button.
Camera software — reports of freezes, crashes, black previews and lag when switching lenses.
Important: these are user reports. Apple has never acknowledged a widespread hardware defect, and not every unit is affected. Test rather than assume.
European version and warranty
European models use 1 nano-SIM + 1 eSIM. In France, buying from a professional gives you a 2-year legal guarantee of conformity.
Watch out for imported units: iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Russia have no satellite features at all, and Chinese models don't offer Apple Intelligence. On a range whose main selling point is AI, check the origin.
