A €1,100 budget: new iPhone 17, or a certified pre-owned iPhone 16 Pro?

Published: 14 October 2026

A new phone or a certified pre-owned one? On a budget of around €1,100, the same question keeps coming back: a new iPhone 17, or a used iPhone 16 Pro?

One thing to clear up first: the iPhone 18 standard model is not coming this year. Apple launched only the iPhone 18 Pro, the 18 Pro Max and the folding Duo this cycle; the standard model moves to a spring cadence, expected spring 2027. So the current standard model is the iPhone 17 — €1,119 on the French Apple Store (256GB).

On the other side, a used iPhone 16 Pro starts at €684.64 on our site. That is a gap of about €434, and this article breaks it down.

As always: our pre-owned stock is not a gamble — every device passes more than 80 inspection points, carries a 6-month warranty and a 14-day return window. The grade describes appearance only; battery health is listed separately.

One: the prices (14 October 2026)

  • New iPhone 17 · 256GB: €1,119 — Apple France list price
  • Used iPhone 16 Pro · 128GB · grade B: from €684.64 — a gap of about €434
  • Used iPhone 16 Pro Max · 256GB · grade B: from €827.64 — the tier that approaches the 17's list price

Watch the SIM variant: €684.64 is an eSIM-only unit. For a physical SIM tray plus eSIM, the 16 Pro starts at €693.31 and the 16 Pro Max at €897.84. Check the label on each device before ordering.

Two: what the new iPhone 17 gives you

  • 120Hz finally reaches the standard model — the iPhone 16 standard was still 60Hz, its most-cited shortcoming. The 17 adds adaptive ProMotion: the most substantial upgrade of this generation.
  • The A19 chip — more than enough day to day, with a 48MP main and 48MP ultra-wide on the back and an 18MP front camera.
  • The certainty of new — new battery, new exterior, a full life cycle, no surprises on opening the box.
  • No more waiting — the 18 standard is spring 2027, so for the next several months this is Apple's current standard model.

In fairness: it has no dedicated telephoto. The 2x zoom is an "optical-quality" crop, well short of a Pro for shooting at distance.

Three: what the used iPhone 16 Pro gives you

  • A 5x telephoto — 12MP folded-prism at 120mm. Distant subjects, concerts, pet close-ups: the one thing the iPhone 17 standard cannot do.
  • Titanium frame and a Pro-grade camera — 48MP ultra-wide, 4K 120fps Dolby Vision, USB 3 transfer.
  • A 2024 flagship at around 60% of its price — from €684.64, €434 below the 17's list price.
  • Every device is visible — one device, one photo: its own real photos, graded condition, battery health listed separately, SIM variant stated.

Four: three questions to decide

  1. Do you often shoot at a distance? If you photograph scenery, concerts, children or pets from afar, the 16 Pro's 5x is a real need.
  2. Does "new and sealed" matter to you? If so, take the iPhone 17: the extra money buys new, and the latest generation.
  3. Can the budget stretch a little? For a larger screen and longer battery life, look at the 16 Pro Max — the €827.64 tier.

Your use decides — not which one is newer.
